artificial intelligence

As we consider the role of technology in our classrooms, I want to make it clear that I do not support the integration of artificial intelligence into education. A recent Forbes article highlighted warnings from school leaders in the UK about the "very real and present hazards and dangers" associated with AI. Moreover, a study has shown that excessive screen time can have detrimental effects on cognitive functions, raising serious concerns about the well-being and development of our students.

I believe it is essential to prioritize our students' mental health and cognitive growth by reducing their exposure to technology in educational settings. To that end, I would support legislation aimed at limiting the use of AI in schools.

Recently, I cast the tie-breaking vote on the Vermont School Boards Association (VSBA) resolution, which calls for our legislature to instruct the Agency of Education to draft model policies addressing the challenges posed by AI. This step is crucial in safeguarding our educational environment and ensuring that it remains focused on effective teaching and learning without the distractions and risks posed by AI.

It’s time for us to take action and establish clear guidelines that protect our students from the potential dangers of AI in education.
